Bangkok – The quake was recorded off the southern coast of Myanmar on Monday, tremors were also felt in Thailand, but there were no immediate reports of major damage.
The magnitude 5.1 earthquake was recorded 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the surface at 8:10 a.m., about 152 kilometers (95 miles) south of Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, according to the Myanmar Meteorological Department.
Thailand’s Meteorological Department put the quake at 8:40 a.m. at 6.0 magnitude and said tremors were felt in the capital Bangkok and nearby Nonthaburi province, some 450 kilometers (280 miles) from the epicenter.
The United States Geological Survey measured the earthquake’s magnitude at 5.6.
Different agencies often have different initial measurements for earthquakes.
According to the public reports section of the Thai government’s Earthquake Observation Division website, several people in high-rise buildings in Bangkok felt the shaking for 15 to 30 seconds.
There were no immediate reports of any significant damage or casualties.
