India is poised to make a significant stride in its defense capabilities with the introduction of the Mk-30MKI stealth fighter aircraft. Over 200 Mk-30 MKI aircraft are undergoing conversion into stealth variants, aimed at bolstering India’s aerial superiority and countering potential threats, particularly from China and also some others countries.

The initiative involves the comprehensive upgrading of existing aircraft, focusing on enhancing radar evasion, electronic warfare capabilities, and overall performance. However, the primary challenge lies in mitigating the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of these heavy aircraft, which significantly increases their vulnerability to enemy radar detection.

To address this concern, India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has developed innovative solutions. Firstly, a novel radar-absorbing material, resembling a sprayable paint, has been created. This material, when applied to critical areas of the aircraft such as air intakes and missile attachments, significantly reduces radar reflection, offering enhanced stealth capabilities. Testing indicates that this material can absorb radar waves from 17 to 97 percent, enhancing the aircraft’s evasion capabilities.

Secondly, specialized radar-absorbing materials are being incorporated into the upper sections of the aircraft to further minimize radar detection. This coating boasts an impressive effectiveness, reportedly protecting against 99% of radar waves.

Moreover, efforts are underway to address the challenge posed by radar emissions from the aircraft’s own systems. India has developed advanced radar technology featuring multiple layers, enabling it to distinguish between friendly and hostile radar signals. This innovation ensures optimal radar functionality while maintaining stealth characteristics.

Despite these advancements, it’s important to note that India’s stealth Su-30MKI is not comparable to fifth-generation stealth aircraft. While its design reduces RCS significantly, it may not achieve full stealth capabilities akin to fifth-generation counterparts. Nevertheless, these enhancements mark a significant leap in India’s aerial capabilities, augmenting the effectiveness of its airforce under the Super Sukai program.
