Chicago — United Airlines says it will use its app to send customers vouchers for rebooking options and, in some cases, meals and hotel rooms when flights are delayed or canceled.
United said Thursday it began testing the service on its app late last year and found it reduced the number of people waiting in airport lines to speak with airline agents.
Airlines are under pressure from the Biden administration to improve customer service. The Department for Transport recently said it would begin writing new rules to require passenger compensation when airlines cause delays and cancellations.
Linda Jojo, United’s chief customer officer, said the new app features will save time and reduce stress for travelers because “we know things don’t always go according to plan.”
So far this year, United has canceled about 5,400 flights, or 1.3% of its schedule, according to data from FlightAware.com, which matches the industrywide average. Nearly 100,000 other United flights have been delayed at least 15 minutes this year.
