New Delhi: Android 14 is said to soon support SMS via satellite feature on mobile phones, marking a significant advancement in mobile communication technology. Based on a tweet by the Pixel #TeamPixel Twitter account, users will likely get Satellite SMS support with Android 14, Phone Arena reported.

“Satellite SMS, Android 14,” it tweeted. Once the update is released, users will be able to use their devices to send and receive SMS messages, even in areas with limited or unavailable cellular coverage.

Furthermore, the tweet also mentions that the Pixel and Galaxy phones will be among the first Android models to be hardware-enabled to support SMS via satellite.

“SMS Satellite will be added to Android, and will require the appropriate hardware, depending on the manufacturer then the Pixel and Galaxy will be the first to have it,” said Pixel #TeamPixel.

The release of the final and stable version of Android 14 is just around the corner, with approximately two to three weeks left before its launch. However, the full scope of satellite support on smartphones remains uncertain.

Apple already supports Emergency SOS through the Satellite feature. With iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models, users can use Emergency SOS via satellite to send emergency services when out of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.

The feature has proven its life-saving potential by helping rescue those stranded in remote areas. Emergency SOS via satellite feature helped rescue two people in a serious car accident in the US.

According to MacRumors, the incident took place on the Angeles Forest Highway in the Angeles National Forest state of California, United States, when a vehicle plunged off the side of a cliff and into a ravine approximately 300 feet away.

An iPhone 14 in the car detected the crash and sent information to rescuers using Emergency SOS via satellite when there was no cellular signal.
