Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, will have to pay a fine of about Rs 82 lakh in Indian currency every day in a matter related to privacy. According to Datatilsynet, Norway’s data protection authority, Meta has been fined one million Norwegian krone (about Rs 82 lakh) every day from 4 August to 3 November. According to the news of Business Today, this fine will have to be paid until necessary action is taken by the company.
Incorrect use of user data
According to the news, the first thing that Datatilsinet has highlighted is the use of users’ data in a wrong way, especially the use of users’ location to be used for ads. Although this happens in almost every company, the Norwegian authority considers it illegal. Tobias Judin, head of Datatilsnet’s international section, said it needed immediate intervention. He said that it is so clear that it is illegal and we cannot wait any longer.
No immediate impact on service
On this decision of the Norwegian authority, Meta has said that it will review the decision. Meta said that this will not have any immediate effect on its service. But it is also clear here that if Meta does not implement the decision, then this fine may have to be paid forever. Also, the regional scope of the decision can extend across Europe. Datatilsnet has referred the matter to the European Data Protection Board.
Fines can be faster
It has also been said that the penalty for meta (Meta penalty news) and consequences can be fast. This will put extra pressure on Meta. The decision follows a ruling by the European Union’s top court that banned Meta from collecting users’ data for behavioral advertising. Reportedly, in December, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), where Meta has its European headquarters, ordered the company to stop this custom.
