Not looking to replace Twitter but…: Instagram’s major big reveal

New Delhi: Instagram head Adam Mosseri clarified that Meta doesn’t want to replace Twitter but to create a public square on Instagram for communities that never adopted Twitter and for communities on the Elon Musk-led platform “that are interested in a less angry space for conversation, but not all Twitter.” . He said the platform will not only focus on breaking news and world events.

“Politics and hard news are inevitably going to show up in Threads — they’re also on Instagram to some extent — but we’re not going to do anything to encourage those verticals,” he posted in Threads. In response to a question from The Verge’s Alex Heath, Mosseri said politics and hard news are important and he didn’t want to imply otherwise.

“But my sense is, from a platform’s perspective, any incremental engagement or revenue they might drive is not worth the scrutiny, negativity (let’s be honest), or the integrity risk that comes with them,” Mosseri said.

There are enough amazing communities — sports, music, fashion, beauty, entertainment, etc. — to create a vibrant platform without the need for politics or hard news, he added.

Mosseri says there are plenty of good offers out there for public conversation.

“But given everything that’s going on, we thought there was an opportunity to create something that was open and something that was good for the community that was already using Instagram,” he added.
