History of Benelli
Benelli was founded in 1911 in Pesaro, Italy, possibly making it the oldest of the Italian motorcycle factories in operation. (Moto Guzzi – the oldest motorcycle factory with non-stop operations – was founded in 1921, and Peugeot is the oldest still-producing motorcycle factory in the world, founded in 1898.) After losing her husband, the widow Teresa Boni Benelli invested all the family’s wealth in hopes that her sons, Francesco, Filippo, Domenico and Antonio, would use Giovanni in their six businesses. (“Tonino”). He sent Giuseppe and Giovanni to Switzerland to study engineering. In the beginning, apart from 5 brothers, 6 employees did the business.
In the beginning, it was just the Benelli garage
In the beginning, it was just a Benelli garage that repaired bicycles and motorcycles, but was already capable of producing all the spare parts needed for repairs. During the First World War, Benelli worked hard to recover parts of the Italian machines in the war, and in 1919 the first motorcycle was presented to the public. In 1920 the company produced its first complete engine in-house, a single-cylinder two-stroke 75 cc model, which was quickly adapted to bicycle frames. A year later in 1921, Benelli produced its first motorcycle, which was then a 98 cc model using its own engine.
Benelli produced the most successful engine in 1927
But the most successful engine, which made Benelli known nationally and internationally, was the 175 cm³ 4-stroke of 1927 with “cascade” distribution and overhead camshafts, a bold and sophisticated solution that soon became a “trademark” of the Pesaro house. Giuseppe Benelli was inspired by Edward Turner’s theoretical study of an engine published in the French magazine Moto Revue in 1925. To beat the competition, Giuseppe wasted no time and completely reinvented the project, providing an ingeniously simple solution to eliminate the negative effects of thermal expansion affecting these applications.
