In a significant announcement, the Prime Minister revealed that the spot on the lunar surface where Chandrayaan-2 made its mark will now be referred to as the ‘Tiranga’ Point. August 23 Designated as National Space Day
During his address at ISRO, PM Modi proclaimed that August 23, the day that witnessed India’s Tricolour being planted on the Moon’s surface, commemorating a historic achievement, will be marked annually as National Space Day. In his speech, the Prime Minister particularly hailed the contributions of women scientists in ISRO’s recent Chandrayaan-3 mission. He emphasized that the power of women is a fundamental essence of our world and applauded them for inspiring the global community. The Prime Minister expressed his profound happiness, sharing that August 23 remains vivid in his memory, deeming such occasions as truly extraordinary.
Direct Transition from Greece to Bengaluru
Following his visit to Greece, Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately arrived in Bengaluru to personally extend his commendations to the team. He initiated his engagement by addressing a gathering outside the airport, then proceeded to ISRO, where he was cordially received by ISRO Chief S. Somanath. Their warm embrace was followed by an exploration of the center, gaining insights into the intricacies of Chandrayaan-3’s lunar landing. Subsequently, PM Modi engaged in a brief interaction with the accomplished scientists involved in the mission.
Shivshakti is a Sanskrit word meaning “the power of Shiva”. It is a fitting name for the landing spot, as it is located in the southern polar region of the Moon, which is thought to be rich in water ice.
Despite the setback, the Chandrayaan-3 mission was a major success for India. It was the country’s third lunar mission and the first to land in the southern polar region of the Moon.
In addition to naming the landing spot of Vikram as Shivshakti, PM Modi also named the crash-landed site of the rover Pragyan as “Tiranga Point”. Tiranga is the Hindi word for the Indian flag.
The Chandrayaan-3 mission may have been a setback, but it is not the end of India’s space journey. The country is already planning its next lunar mission, Chandrayaan-4.
