Touted as a direct competitor to Twitter, Mark Zuckerberg recently launched Threads, claiming it was a “friendly” alternative to the microblogging website. While the Meta-owned platform is new and new to try your hand at, it turns out that users can’t delete their Thread account after signing up on the site. If you are among those people who have downloaded the app but want to get rid of it, we are here to offer some help.

Although users cannot delete their Thread account without touching their Instagram handle, they can still deactivate it for now. To be clear, it is currently impossible to delete your Thread account without deleting your Instagram account.

“You can deactivate your Thread profile at any time, but your Thread profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account,” reads a note on Thread’s privacy policy.

How to deactivate your thread account?

1. Go to your Threads app on your device and click on the profile picture at the bottom-right of the screen

2. Click on the menu icon and go to the settings menu.

3. Select ‘Account’.

4. Click on ‘Deactivate’ profile option to deactivate your account

5. Selecting this will log you out of the app and redirect you to the login screen.

Note: Deactivating your thread account will also temporarily disable your entire profile including threads, replies, likes and followers. However, the account will not be deleted. You can reactivate it at any time by logging in with your username and password.

On the other hand, if someone wants to delete their Thread account permanently, they need to delete their Instagram account as well. It can be expected that Instagram will eventually allow users to individually delete their Thread accounts. But nothing is confirmed yet.

About the Thread app

Launched on July 5, the Thread app has already reached close to 100 million users in less than a week. Currently the app is dependent on Instagram. So, one must have an Instagram account to use the threads.
